Obituary - Raleigh Register, August 24, 1809 MoreDEATH OF REV. JOSEPH ALEXANDER, 1809. On the 29th ult. in York District, S. C., the Rev. Joseph Alexander, D.D., Minister of the Presbyterian Church, approaching to 80 years of age. He was a native of Pennsylvania , and graduated at Princeton College in 1760. He came to Carolina soon after the Peace of 1763, and was eminently instrumental in planting Churches both in North and South Carolina, at that early period of the settlement of the back country, when both states were in a very destitute condition with respect to religious instruction. He was an excellent classical scholar, and one of the fathers of learning in the Western Woods of Carolina.
A History of the Rock Presbyterian Church by Rev. J. H. Johns, Cecil Co. MD (1872) More... He spent the greater part of his exceedingly useful life teaching and preaching at Bullocks Creek, York District, South Carolina. He was a man of commanding talents, fine education, a very animated, popular preacher, and renowned as a teacher of youth...
During the Revolution he was a fearless patriot, and often preached while the men of his church, armed to the teeth, guarded his life. He married a daughter of President Davies, of Princeton College; was said to be quite small in stature, and lame. He died July 30th, 1809.
